USS Stormes (DD-780) was an Allen M. Sumner-class destroyer commissioned in January 1945 and named after Commander Max Clifford Stormes, killed in action at Guadalcanal in 1942. She served in the Pacific Theater during the final months of World War II, suffering significant damage from a kamikaze strike off Okinawa in May 1945, and subsequently participated in Korean War operations with Task Force 77 in 1951–1952. The destroyer maintained active service throughout the Cold War, based at Norfolk and conducting numerous deployments to the Mediterranean and Caribbean with the 6th Fleet, while also achieving note for recovering the orbital spacecraft carrying chimpanzee Enos in 1961.
