Veterans with advanced mesothelioma often reach a point where they need help with the activities of daily living. When that happens, they may qualify for Aid & Attendance — an additional VA benefit paid on top of their disability compensation.

What Aid & Attendance Is

Aid & Attendance (A&A) is a form of Special Monthly Compensation (SMC) — an increased benefit for veterans who, because of their service-connected condition, need the regular aid of another person or are housebound. For a veteran already rated 100% for mesothelioma, A&A adds to the monthly amount to reflect the higher level of care the disease requires.

Who May Qualify

A veteran may qualify for Aid & Attendance if they need help with everyday activities such as:

  • Bathing, dressing, or feeding themselves
  • Managing medications
  • Getting in and out of bed or moving around safely
  • Protecting themselves from daily hazards

Being bedridden or requiring nursing-home or in-home care are common qualifying circumstances — situations mesothelioma patients frequently face as the disease progresses.

Why It Matters for Mesothelioma

Because mesothelioma is aggressive and its treatment is demanding, many veterans move from independent living to needing daily assistance in a relatively short time. Aid & Attendance is designed for exactly this situation and can meaningfully increase the monthly benefit at the time care costs rise.

How to File and Get Free Help

Aid & Attendance is requested through the VA — not a law firm. Start at VA.gov › Special Monthly Compensation or call 1-800-827-1000. Veterans Service Organizations — DAV, VFW, and the American Legion — provide free, accredited help with A&A and SMC requests.

Separate From a Civil Claim

Aid & Attendance is a VA benefit, separate from any civil claim against asbestos manufacturers. See VA Benefits vs. Civil Lawsuit.
