USS Vesole (DD-878) was a Gearing-class radar picket destroyer commissioned in April 1945 and named for Ensign Kay Kopl Vesole, a Naval Reserve officer who died heroically during the Luftwaffe air raid on Bari, Italy in December 1943. The ship served throughout the Cold War conducting operations along the U.S. East Coast, Caribbean, and Mediterranean, participated in the Cuban Missile Crisis blockade, and deployed to Vietnam where she served as plane guard for aircraft carriers and participated in gunfire support missions. Vesole was decommissioned in December 1976 and subsequently sunk as a target in April 1983.
