USS Enterprise (CVN-80), a Gerald R. Ford class nuclear aircraft carrier, is under construction at Newport News Shipbuilding and will carry on the name of the most storied vessel in U.S. Navy history. Enterprise will be powered by two Bechtel A1B nuclear reactors driving four steam turbines, and will incorporate the Electromagnetic Aircraft Launch System and Advanced Arresting Gear. Enterprise’s construction has incorporated steam plant insulation, pipe lagging, gaskets, and construction materials consistent with current naval construction specifications.
USS Enterprise Steam Plant and Hull Asbestos
Enterprise’s hull construction and onboard systems have incorporated asbestos in multiple areas:
- Steam plant insulation — Enterprise’s steam generators, high-pressure steam piping, main propulsion turbines, and turbine generator spaces have incorporated insulation materials consistent with current nuclear naval construction specifications, which according to publicly filed litigation records have included asbestos-containing materials
- Hull and structural insulation — Enterprise’s crew berthing, aviation spaces, engineering spaces, and working spaces have been constructed with insulation materials consistent with current naval construction specifications, which according to publicly filed litigation records have included asbestos-containing materials
- Gaskets and packing materials — Enterprise’s engineering spaces and steam plant systems have incorporated gaskets and valve packing consistent with current construction specifications, which according to publicly filed litigation records have included asbestos-containing materials
- Fire-protective and thermal barriers — Enterprise’s aviation spaces, engineering compartments, and combat spaces have incorporated fire-protective insulation materials consistent with current naval construction standards
VA Claims for USS Enterprise Veterans
VA presumptive service connection under 38 CFR § 3.309(d) covers asbestos exposure from Navy aircraft carrier service. Machinist’s Mates, Boiler Technicians, Hull Technicians, Aviation Boatswain’s Mates, and crew members who served during USS Enterprise’s construction period or commissioning and have since been diagnosed with mesothelioma, asbestosis, or asbestos-related lung cancer may qualify for VA disability benefits.
The asbestos-containing products documented on U.S. Navy vessels and at shipyards are catalogued by manufacturer on AsbestosIndex. These records cross-reference which companies supplied which materials and to which facilities.

VA Presumptive Benefits — No Filing Deadline
The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs recognizes mesothelioma, asbestos-related lung cancer, asbestosis, and pleural disease as conditions presumed to be service-connected for Navy veterans with documented asbestos exposure under 38 CFR § 3.309(d). No statute of limitations applies to VA disability compensation claims.
Available benefits may include monthly disability compensation, Dependency & Indemnity Compensation (DIC) for surviving spouses, priority VA healthcare enrollment, and Special Monthly Compensation for severe cases. Parallel claims against the asbestos bankruptcy trust funds established by the manufacturers of these products do not reduce VA compensation.
How to file a VA disability claim: VA claims are filed directly with the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs — not with a law firm. Start at VA.gov › Hazardous Materials Exposure, call 1‑800‑827‑1000, or get free help filing from a Veterans Service Organization: DAV, VFW, or American Legion.
