Northampton class heavy cruisers — six ships (USS Northampton CA-26, USS Chester CA-27, USS Louisville CA-28, USS Chicago CA-29, USS Augusta CA-31, USS Houston CA-30, commissioned 1930–1931) — were Treaty heavy cruisers forming the core of US Navy heavy cruiser strength at the start of WWII. Built at Bethlehem Steel Quincy, New York Shipbuilding, and other yards, these ships were powered by eight boilers driving four sets of Westinghouse or Parsons geared steam turbines. Several were lost in WWII Pacific operations: USS Northampton was sunk at the Battle of Tassafaronga (November 30, 1942), USS Chicago was sunk at the Battle of Rennell Island (January 1943), and USS Houston was sunk in the Battle of the Java Sea (February 1942). Survivors USS Chester, USS Louisville, and USS Augusta served through the entire war.

Interwar Steam Plant and Asbestos

Northampton class heavy cruisers used large eight-boiler steam plants with extensive asbestos insulation:

  • Main boiler insulation — the eight boilers in Northampton class ships used asbestos block insulation on boiler casings and asbestos-containing refractory in firebox construction from the original 1930–1931 commissioning. Boiler Tender ratings maintaining these boilers worked in continuous proximity to asbestos-insulated boiler surfaces in the fire rooms throughout the ships’ interwar and WWII service
  • Main steam system pipe insulation — the main steam piping from eight boilers to four turbine sets covered extensive distance in these 600-foot cruisers, all insulated with asbestos pipe covering from the original early 1930s construction. Engineering ratings in the fire rooms and engine rooms were in continuous proximity to aging asbestos-insulated steam piping
  • Turbine insulation — the main propulsion turbines and reduction gear aboard Northampton class ships used asbestos-containing thermal insulation lagging consistent with early 1930s heavy cruiser construction specifications

Early 1930s Interior Construction

Northampton class ships used early interwar construction materials:

  • The crew berthing, mess, and working spaces throughout these early 1930s heavy cruisers used period construction materials including asbestos-containing deck products, overhead insulation, and bulkhead construction throughout the cruiser’s hull from the original commissioning

VA Claims for Northampton Class Veterans

VA presumptive service connection under 38 CFR § 3.309(d) covers asbestos exposure aboard Navy heavy cruisers. Engineering ratings and crew members who served aboard Northampton class heavy cruisers (CA-26 through CA-31) and have since been diagnosed with mesothelioma, asbestosis, or asbestos-related lung cancer may qualify for VA disability benefits.

VA Presumptive Benefits — No Filing Deadline

The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs recognizes mesothelioma, asbestos-related lung cancer, asbestosis, and pleural disease as conditions presumed to be service-connected for Navy veterans with documented asbestos exposure under 38 CFR § 3.309(d). No statute of limitations applies to VA disability compensation claims.

Available benefits may include monthly disability compensation, Dependency & Indemnity Compensation (DIC) for surviving spouses, priority VA healthcare enrollment, and Special Monthly Compensation for severe cases. Parallel claims against the asbestos bankruptcy trust funds established by the manufacturers of these products do not reduce VA compensation.

How to file a VA disability claim: VA claims are filed directly with the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs — not with a law firm. Start at VA.gov › Hazardous Materials Exposure, call 1‑800‑827‑1000, or get free help filing from a Veterans Service Organization: DAV, VFW, or American Legion.
