The Newport class tank landing ships — LST-1179 through LST-1198 — were built between 1966 and 1972 at National Steel and Shipbuilding Corporation (NASSCO) in San Diego and Philadelphia Naval Shipyard. The Newport class introduced a bow ramp and fixed bow design that replaced the clam-shell bow doors of WWII LSTs, while using diesel propulsion plants in place of the steam plants of earlier designs. Despite the diesel propulsion, Newport class vessels contained asbestos-containing materials in their engineering spaces, interior construction, and diesel exhaust systems consistent with Navy shipbuilding standards through the early 1970s.
Diesel Propulsion and Asbestos on Newport Class LSTs
Newport class LSTs used diesel engines rather than the steam turbines of larger Navy combatants, but diesel engineering spaces contained asbestos in applications common to all Navy diesel vessels:
- Diesel engine exhaust manifold gaskets using asbestos spiral-wound and sheet gasket material in high-temperature exhaust service
- Exhaust piping insulation on the hot diesel exhaust runs from engine room to stack using asbestos block and sectional covering
- Auxiliary systems including air compressors, bilge and ballast pumps, and fuel handling equipment using asbestos packing in valve and pump stuffing boxes
- Electrical distribution systems in diesel-electric auxiliaries using asbestos-insulated wiring and switchgear
Interior Construction Asbestos
Newport class LSTs were built during the period when asbestos remained standard in Navy interior construction. Crew berthing, officer quarters, and working spaces used asbestos floor tile, overhead lagging, and bulkhead insulation. Amphibious ship interior construction during this era followed the same material specifications as other Navy auxiliary vessels.
Tank Deck and Landing Operations
Newport class LSTs carried main battle tanks, vehicles, and amphibious assault equipment on their vehicle-capable tank decks. The tank deck environment — large enclosed spaces where diesel vehicles operated — created additional exposure from vehicle exhaust components containing asbestos gaskets and brake materials from the embarked vehicles.
Class Hull Roll
The Newport class included USS Newport (LST-1179), USS Manitowoc (LST-1180), USS Sumter (LST-1181), USS Fresno (LST-1182), USS Peoria (LST-1183), USS Frederick (LST-1184), USS Schenectady (LST-1185), USS Cayuga (LST-1186), USS Tuscaloosa (LST-1187), USS Saginaw (LST-1188), USS San Bernardino (LST-1189), USS Boulder (LST-1190), USS Racine (LST-1191), USS Spartanburg County (LST-1192), USS Fairfax County (LST-1193), USS La Moure County (LST-1194), USS Barbour County (LST-1195), USS Harlan County (LST-1196), USS Barnstable County (LST-1197), and USS Bristol County (LST-1198).
VA Claims for Newport Class Veterans
VA presumptive service connection under 38 CFR § 3.309(d) covers asbestos exposure aboard Navy amphibious vessels including tank landing ships. Veterans who served aboard Newport class LSTs before the vessels’ decommissioning and have since been diagnosed with mesothelioma, asbestosis, or asbestos-related lung cancer may qualify for VA disability benefits.
The asbestos-containing products documented on U.S. Navy vessels and at shipyards are catalogued by manufacturer on AsbestosIndex. These records cross-reference which companies supplied which materials and to which facilities.

VA Presumptive Benefits — No Filing Deadline
The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs recognizes mesothelioma, asbestos-related lung cancer, asbestosis, and pleural disease as conditions presumed to be service-connected for Navy veterans with documented asbestos exposure under 38 CFR § 3.309(d). No statute of limitations applies to VA disability compensation claims.
Available benefits may include monthly disability compensation, Dependency & Indemnity Compensation (DIC) for surviving spouses, priority VA healthcare enrollment, and Special Monthly Compensation for severe cases. Parallel claims against the asbestos bankruptcy trust funds established by the manufacturers of these products do not reduce VA compensation.
How to file a VA disability claim: VA claims are filed directly with the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs — not with a law firm. Start at VA.gov › Hazardous Materials Exposure, call 1‑800‑827‑1000, or get free help filing from a Veterans Service Organization: DAV, VFW, or American Legion.
