Naval Air Station Sigonella, located in the Catania Plain of eastern Sicily near the city of Catania, serves as the primary United States Navy aviation installation in the Mediterranean and the logistics and maintenance hub for Sixth Fleet operations. NAS Sigonella — known informally as “the Hub” — was established in 1959 and has served continuously as the Mediterranean forward operating base for Navy maritime patrol aircraft, anti-submarine warfare aviation, and logistics operations. The station hosts VP (patrol) squadrons operating P-3 Orion and later P-8 Poseidon aircraft on Mediterranean maritime patrol deployments and supports a wide range of Sixth Fleet and allied aviation operations.

Cold War-Era Building Infrastructure

NAS Sigonella was built and expanded during the Cold War period and its older building stock reflects that construction era:

  • 1950s-1960s construction at NAS Sigonella — the original NAS Sigonella building complex constructed in 1959-1965 used construction materials and methods consistent with the Cold War-era US military construction standards of that period, with asbestos-containing floor tile, ceiling tile, and building mechanical insulation incorporated in the original station buildings
  • Maintenance hangars at NAS Sigonella — the P-3 Orion patrol aircraft maintenance hangars at NAS Sigonella built during the 1960s-1970s used asbestos-containing construction materials in hangar structure and mechanical systems consistent with the construction standards of that era
  • Bachelor officers’ and enlisted quarters — the on-station accommodation buildings at NAS Sigonella constructed during the station’s expansion periods incorporated asbestos-containing construction materials in building interiors as was standard in US military overseas base construction in the 1960s-1970s

Patrol Aircraft Maintenance

NAS Sigonella served as the primary Mediterranean maintenance and staging base for P-3 Orion maritime patrol aircraft:

  • P-3 Orion periodic maintenance — VP squadron P-3 Orion aircraft rotating through NAS Sigonella for Mediterranean deployments received maintenance at the NAS Sigonella AIMD facilities. P-3 Orion aircraft built in the early production runs (1960s) used asbestos-containing insulation in the fuselage interior and engine nacelle construction
  • Engine maintenance — P-3 Orion Allison T56 turboprop engine maintenance performed at NAS Sigonella by AD (Aviation Machinist’s Mate) and AE ratings included work on engine components with asbestos-containing insulation and gasket materials in the earlier engine production runs

Mediterranean Deployment Hub

Personnel rotating through NAS Sigonella on Sixth Fleet deployments lived and worked in the station’s older building infrastructure:

  • Navy personnel on Sixth Fleet deployment rotations spending weeks to months at NAS Sigonella occupied station barracks, working spaces, and maintenance facilities with asbestos-containing construction materials in the older building stock

VA Claims for NAS Sigonella Veterans

VA presumptive service connection under 38 CFR § 3.309(d) covers asbestos exposure at naval aviation installations overseas. Veterans who served at NAS Sigonella in Cold War-era buildings or performed P-3 Orion maintenance and have since been diagnosed with mesothelioma, asbestosis, or asbestos-related lung cancer may qualify for VA disability benefits.
