A.P. Green Industries, headquartered in Mexico, Missouri, was a major US manufacturer of refractory materials including brick, castable refractories, plastic refractories, and mortar products used in high-temperature industrial applications. Refractory products from A.P. Green were used to line the fireboxes, combustion chambers, and furnace walls of industrial boilers, kilns, and furnaces throughout the twentieth century. Refractory formulations from the manufacturing era contained asbestos as a reinforcing fiber in castable and plastic products to improve thermal resistance and mechanical stability.
Navy Boiler Applications
Shore boiler plants at naval installations — the central steam plants heating large base complexes, powering industrial operations, and supplying process steam — used refractory lining in their boiler fireboxes. Boiler Technicians (BT), pipefitters, and insulation workers who maintained and repaired these shore boilers encountered refractory materials during fireside inspection, tube cleaning, and refractory rebricking operations.
Refractory castable materials — mixed with water and cast in place to form boiler lining — were a primary asbestos exposure source for workers who mixed, applied, and broke out old refractory. Breaking out worn refractory lining generated significant dust that included asbestos fibers from the castable formulation.
A.P. Green in the Asbestos Litigation Record
Asbestos trust fund records document claims against A.P. Green Industries for asbestos-related illness resulting from exposure to the company’s refractory products. One documented claim describes an asbestosis case involving A.P. Green as a claimant in an offer-to-pay record. A.P. Green’s castable and plastic refractory products were widely used in industrial boiler maintenance by insulation contractors, boilermakers, and boiler room operators throughout the Midwest and nationally.
A.P. Green Industries filed for bankruptcy reorganization, and an asbestos trust fund was established as part of that process. Workers and veterans who can document exposure to A.P. Green refractory products may have claims against the AP Green Services Asbestos Settlement Trust.
Specialty Refractory Products
A.P. Green’s product line included high-temperature castable refractories (including the “SK-7” product referenced in published litigation records) designed for the most demanding fireside boiler applications. These products were formulated with chrysotile asbestos and other refractory fibers to achieve the required thermal performance for boiler service. Workers applying SK-7 and similar castable products by mixing dry powder with water and placing the wet castable were exposed to asbestos from the dry powder at the mixing stage.
VA and Trust Fund Claims
Veterans who performed or were present during boiler maintenance operations involving refractory removal and replacement at Navy shore boiler plants may have documented asbestos exposure from A.P. Green or similar refractory products. VA presumptive service connection under 38 CFR § 3.309(d) covers shore-duty asbestos exposure. Identifying the specific refractory products used in the installations where a veteran worked is part of the exposure documentation process for trust fund claims.
